Email marketing for a musician, is a wonderful way to keep in touch with your fan base. It’s simply a very sweet help. What niche marketing is for any content marketer, e-mail marketing can be for a musician.
Did you receive an e-mail today, from someone you didn’t know you knew? It happens all the time. Someone gets your e-mail and they send you an e-mail asking you to join, to buy, to this or that…
There are no limits to what these e-mails can be about, and you keep wondering.
“Why do I get all these e-mails?”
Usually we get these e-mails because we asked for some information somewhere. This information was probably sent to you and hopefully made you happy.
I believe you got the information you wanted and maybe even took action on it. Why you get more of these e-mails could be a mystery, but I’m sorry to say It’s not.
It’s called e-mail marketing, and what I told you is the annoying part. The one you don’t want to be a part of, except for the ones you like. When you use these tools right, you will notice that e-mail marketing for a musician can be a way of getting a bigger audience at your concerts or gigs or more people will buy your music.
This Is How It Works
It usually starts with you entering a site where they tell you that your information can be shared with third parties or that you will get more offers from the company you ordered from. Is there something wrong in that?
Not really, but unfortunately there are people exploiting the situation, so some of the offers you get, are more than just offers. They become spam.
This post is not about spam, it’s about another side of e-mail marketing, the good one. Here is .
The good part of e-mail marketing,
where we use e-mail to keep in touch with our audience and give them all the good information they want.
I’ll also tell you how this makes people feel very special, so keep reading
How do you approach it
E-mail marketing is actually very easy, if you look at the technical aspects of it. There are a few different approaches and I will try to list them here. (PS! If you see I’ve missed one you know about, please tell me in the comment section and I’ll get it into the article. Thank you :-)!)
Having a plan for your fans
If you have a form on your site, for your fans to join a fanclub or newletter, you will make it arranged in a way that you get their name and e-mail address. That’s what you need to do e-mail marketing.
When you are having a concert – make an app
You can make an app on many different places. The app should contain everything you have released online, and maybe something very special for that app. In this way you will have more people to download it. Inside this app, you will of course have a place where they can place their name, e-mail address and maybe a phone number. Any way, make sure that you get their e-mail address so you can send them one.
How do you plan to make it work
If all you want to do is to send them a newsletter about your next concerts, you don’t need so many fancy tools. Unless you start getting a lot of fans. Then you would like to control some of their wishes. Some people just want to be a part of a list, receive information, others are very great helpers for your campaigns, they send your information to their friends and share it among a lot of people.
Those are the ones you love to have on your list.
This is more or less what happens in an e-mail campaign. You collect e-mail addresses and you send them e-mail when you have some important information to share. Lots of musicians forget this: You always have important information to share.
One thing about fans, they can’t get enough information about you. Everything you can share with them, will make them bigger supporters. This is not something you should exploit, rather use it for what is good for you and your fans. You don’t have to share what’s private, but you have always something you can share, and everything is of interest. A bit at a time.
Make your fans special
What you do for your career is important information for your fans. If you share what you do, this will make your fans feel very special. They know something most people don’t know, and they start talking about it, and more people get interested and you get your fans to make others join your list of fans, and suddenly you have a lot of people following you!
When you, as a next step, make a recording, make one that is unique for you e-mail fans. This one will make even more people get to your e-mail campaigns and you have a chance to reach out to a whole lot more people and tell them about your concerts, your recordings, where they can find it, buy it or what you would want them to do. This is the most effective way of marketing, because your fans will always open you mails first, they are your fans, remember?
How to make it automatic
It’s actually possible to make this operation automatic. This way you will have a lot more time to practice and schedule your next concert, gig, rehearsal or whatever you want to schedule.
There are some computer programs that can help you keeping your list of fans tidy. You can even have them sorted in separate lists. In this way you can reach those of your fans you’ve sorted out for the different occasions or places or what you have sorted them under. At the same time, you can always send information to everyone.
These programs are called auto responders. I know that some people have problems with making the contact surface on automatic. Again, if used right, it’s actually better than if you don’t use it.
Here is a link that shows you an autoresponder. Click the blue link below and have a look, it’s completely safe (it opens up in a new tab, so don’t worry, this article is still open). Inside an auto responder, it is easy to make selections when you want to send information to some of your fans. You can also notice how many opens your e-mails, so you will know if they got your message or not.
If you make special offers, for instance, it’s great to have an automated answer to those who win, don’t you think?
The flexibility is larger than you think and when you use it right, you get more time to do what you want to do, your practicing or rehearsing or making that new music. This is a great way to save some time.
Why you should use that time wisely
Look at this:
To become a better musician, you need to practice.
To become a more attracting musician, you need to improve your playing/singing.
People don’t care of how you look, unless you do
People care about how you sound, even if you don’t
The first is true
the Second is true.
You probably know it. If you want to have more people join you, you have to keep up with yourself.
not your looks.
What you sound like is what makes you interesting as a musician, so keep to your sound and forget about how you look (apart from the fact that you have to feel good about yourself, but that’s another story.) As long as you feel comfortable about yourself, you’re good. That’s enough.
so, What Is Email marketing for a musician?
It is a wonderful way of keeping your network up-to-date.
Your network is what makes your career exist over time. If you don’t take care of your network, you will notice that you get to a certain point and never further.
You might get to this point several times, but never further…
Keep your network informed of what you do.
You do know that you should have two kinds of networks as a musician. You need to have contact with all the vendors and colleagues, managers, friends and family and you need to have a network relation to your fans.
Your fans will give you more fans, if you play your cards right, (meaning: play your cards right)
Your other network is the one that keeps you busy improving your skills and were you get your critique, the one you don’t like, but need to hear.
Taking care of those two sides of your business (you can use them as separated list in an autoresponder), and you will have a healthy relationship to everyone interested and involved in your business.
